Antique Quarter-sawn Oak Bookcase Mission Oak Ecclesiastical 58 x 38 x 13
One of the finest bookcases we have had in this exceptionally rare style. This cabinet dates to the very early 1900's and is solid, wide flake, quarter-sawn oak, including the sides and top.
No veneer on this cabinet. Very rare cathedral doors and the fretwork inserts are undamaged. The top is not scratched and has no potted plant syndrome. The left glass is the original wavy glass and the right glass is replacement double strength glass. Glass sits tight in the frames and does not rattle.
The original wood casters roll properly. The doors open and close properly and are not bowed. The left door has 2 original inside catches. The lock and key are original and the lock functions correctly. We never make a representation as to the mechanical longevity of any antique furniture lock.
The finish is excellent, matte, like Arts & Crafts furniture is supposed to be. There are 4 original poplar shelves that are 11" x 36". The shelves are reversible and do NOT have plate grooves.The shelves are not scratched, and there are no musty old book smells in the cabinet. All of the original shelf pins are present and they are adjustable at about 2 increments. Hard to find a cabinet with 4 original shelves. The cabinet has undergone a professional refinish in years gone by and it remains excellent +. There is no evidence of any repair work that I can see.
The back of the cabinet is oak veneer plywood, and presents very well on the interior. The back does show a few veneer blisters on the outermost rear layer and these are quite typical of a cabinet of this vintage, but the back is tight and should easily last another lifetime or two. The cabinet measures 58 1/2" tall x 38 1/2" wide x 12 3/4 deep. Shelves are 11 x 36. This is a 100+ year old refinished antique cabinet and not a reproduction.It is not brand new and does not pretend to be. There may be a very small scratch or two here and there that will not show up in the photos. Having said that, this unusually styled cabinet is as close to pristine as you will find.
